Determining dog intelligence.

Stanley Coren is a psychology professor and neuro-psychological researcher who has now also become well known for his research studies into dog behavior and intelligence. Perhaps his most recognized work in this area is his listing of the most intelligent dog breeds.

A few key factors in a dogs intelligence ranking were “understanding of new commands” and “obey first command. The highest category rated dogs had an “understanding of new commands” within 5 or fewer repetitions and “obeyed first command” 95 percent of the time or better. While the lowest ranking of dogs took 80 to 100 repetitions before they appeared to develop an “understanding of new commands” and “obeyed first command” 25 percent of the time or less.

Factors which were not taken into account in determining intelligence, and which could have some influence on levels, were a dogs stubborn nature, and willingness to please their trainer.

The most intelligent dogs to top the list were:

Keep in mind that the highest category rated dogs had an “understanding of new commands” within 5 or fewer repetitions and “obeyed first command” 95 percent of the time or better. While the lowest ranking of dogs took 80 to 100 repetitions before they appeared to develop an “understanding of new commands” and “obeyed first command” 25 percent of the time or less.

Intelligent dogs that rated from between 11 and 20 on the most intelligence dog list.

You will notice that some dogs tied for their spot on the most intelligent dog list.

The least Intelligent dogs on the list were….

Remember that the highest category rated dogs had an “understanding of new commands” within 5 or fewer repetitions and “obeyed first command” 95 percent of the time or better. While the lowest ranking of dogs took 80 to 100 repetitions before they appeared to develop an “understanding of new commands” and “obeyed first command” 25 percent of the time or less.

So whichever dog it is that warms your heart.

When the time comes to train your puppy the dog intelligence lists may help you to know how patient you will have to be during the process.

Just keep in mind that it is not always the smartest dog who is the best dog. Loyalty and a gentle nature are very important too.

My favorite dog breeds turn out to be some of the lowest dogs on the list but that’s perfectly okay with me. I love Beagles and the loudly baying Hound dogs. I guess I have a soft spot for the dumbest dogs (or maybe it is reversed there and they have a soft spot for me).
