Magic Dog Cheese Treats

Ingredients: (40 large biscuits)

  • 1 cup of rolled oats
  • 1/3 cup of margarine or butter
  • 1 cup of boiling water
  • 3/4 cup of cornmeal (if your dog has an allergy to cornmeal, substitute bran)
  • 2 teaspoons of chicken or beef broth
  • 1/2 cup of milk (preferably skim)
  • 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese (or other cheese)
  • 1 beaten egg
  • 2 cups of white or whole-wheat flour

Preparation:

  • Preheat your oven to 325 F and grease your cookie sheets
  • Mix oats, butter and water in a large bowl and then let stand for 10 minutes
  • Add the cornmeal, broth, milk, grated cheese and egg
  • Stir energetically for one minute
  • Add the flour, 1 cup at a time, making sure it’s mixed well and turns into a stiff dough
  • Flour a working surface and knead your dough in the remaining flour until it is smooth and no longer sticky (it can take up to 5 minutes)
  • Roll your dough out to 1/2-inch thickness
  • Cut into whatever shapes you’d like with a dog cookie cutter
  • Place the shapes 1 inch apart on the cookie sheets
  • Baking time: 35 to 45 minutes or until golden brown
  • Cool completely
