The Australian Shepherd is part of the herding breed of dogs. By their very nature, it would fairly appropriate to assume that they are an active breed. However, it would be equally inappropriate to assume that just because they are active they are hyper.
The Australian Shepherd, or “Aussie” as they are so fondly referred to, is an athletic dog by nature. Originally bred for the purpose of herding, they can now be found as service dogs, working dogs, performance dogs and wonderful canine companions.
- They love their people.
- They love to learn.
- They live to please.
- They thrive in stimulating environments.
While there are always exceptions to the rule, they generally are not “couch potatoes“. They do best with at least 30-60min of physical activity daily that includes but is not limited to fetching a ball, going for a walk, agility training, obedience training or catching a Frisbee. The great thing is that we also do best with 30-60 minutes of physical activity daily. A win-win situation!
The Aussie can play and then come in the house and lay down. They have what we call an “off switch”.
